A guide to cataloguing and classification for school libraries.

No matter how many wonderful resources we have in our libraries they are redundant unless our users can find them easily. On this course we will learn about the importance of cataloguing our stock and also how we arrange it on our library shelves according to the age and abilities of our students. But we will also be considering the hidden magic of selecting descriptive keywords and subject headings so that students can locate what they need for themselves. Maybe due to the pandemic our service has changed and we may have invested in more digital products. It is important to ensure these too are visible and this course will give you ideas. Finally, we will consider automated cataloguing software (LMS) and discover ways to maximise its use in teaching and learning.

It is important for any library that users can find the information they need in whatever format easily. This course considers the different ways we might arrange our stock with particular emphasis on the Dewey Decimal System and how this can be adapted to suit different age groups and needs of the school. We will discover the secret to good cataloguing content and how to make digital media more visible. Finally the course will cover maximising the potential of your LMS. The course will be practical and interactive!

Part 1

What is cataloguing and classification?

  • How do we define these terms? What different systems of classification exist and what should be used? An introduction to the Dewey Decimal Classification system and how to teach it to students.

Dewey Decimal Classification for the School Library

  • Using more complex numbers and Dewey tables. Tweaking Dewey for the school library in some “difficult” areas, for younger students and alternatives for arranging fiction resources. Exercise will be set to be completed overnight.

Part 2

Selecting keywords and subject heading

  • Feedback from the set activity on vocabulary. Importance of connecting with the school community when selecting what to use – age, curriculum language, ability. How do we ensure digital products are found?

Using automated cataloguing software (LMS)

  • How do we want to use our LMS – library or whole school? How can it be adapted into a teaching and learning tool?
