Aims of the course
  • Understand key concepts and theories of creativity and how they apply to the role of the school librarian. 
  • Explore and practice a range of creative thinking strategies that can be applied to common school library tasks and challenges. 
  • Experiment with innovative approaches to problem-solving, resource curation, and student engagement within the school library context. 
  • Develop confidence and strategies to encourage creative thinking in others, including students, colleagues, and the wider school community. 
Intended outcomes
  • Identify opportunities for creativity in their daily work and apply creative strategies to enhance their practice. 
  • Design and implement at least one creative library-based initiative tailored to their school’s context. 
  • Facilitate and model creative thinking techniques with students and staff, becoming an advocate for a more innovative school culture. 
  • Reflect critically on their own creative development and articulate the value of creativity as a core professional skill.

Sarah Pavey has worked as a teacher librarian for many years, both in the independent and maintained sectors in the UK. She has published several professional books including “The Networked Librarian: The School Librarians Role in Fostering Connections, Collaboration and Co-creation Across the Community” Facet, February 2024 She has written many articles for the international library press and blogged for the UK Information Literacy Group on the subject of AI. Sarah has spoken at numerous teaching and library conferences and training events, most recently at the World Education Summit. Sarah also holds a post 16 teaching certificate and is involved with the training of teachers and librarians on a regular basis in a variety of areas.

9:00  The Power of Creativity in the Library Understand what creativity is (e.g., divergent thinking, innovation, lateral thinking) and why it matters in education and school librarianship. Theoretical aspects through Torrance, Dweck and Guilford. Reflect on personal and professional creative identity and begin practicing creative thinking strategies.                                                                              Plenary 
10:30  Coffee break 
11:00  Think Divergently Apply creative strategies to everyday library tasks and programmes using techniques such as SCAMPER. Experiment with idea generation techniques and explore new ways to solve familiar problems. How to be creative under constraints (e.g., budget, space, teaching time).                  Plenary                               
13:00  Lunch break 
14:00  Spreading Creative Confidence in Your School Build strategies for embedding creativity into library culture and explore how to encourage creative skills in staff and students to become a creative leader. Embedding creativity into collaboration. Developing a personal action plan.
