Aims of the course

With many of our EAL learners reaching the level of advanced bilingual it is important that teachers understand how best to support their learners to reach the next level in their academic success. This course:

  • Addresses the word gap that so many EAL learners have, how to identify it and how vocabulary can be implemented across a whole school.
  • Offers practical ideas and guidance as to how to support EAL learners to reach their potential academically without the need for extensive withdrawal or intervention.
  • Demonstrates how to use images and video to effectively hook in learners to enable effective writing.
Intended outcomes

Teachers will:

  • Increase familiarity surrounding explicit vocabulary instruction.
  • Refresh their subject knowledge of word types and the words needed for academic success.
  • Understand how EAL learners learn to read and common difficulties faced
  • Using phonics to develop language
  • Consider ways to develop writing, whilst reducing cognitive overload
  • Gain ideas for practical activities and resources that they can easily use in their own lessons.
  • Gain a better understanding of how images, video, sound and picture books can effectively be used to scaffold writing.

Beth Southern has over 15 years’ experience of working with EAL learners across both primary and secondary, independent and state sector and international schools. Previously a Head of EAL in a large inner city UK school, Beth knows what it’s like to have very high numbers of EAL learners operating at a wide range of levels. Having set up the department and taken it through a successful Ofsted inspection, Beth went on to obtain a PgDip in Teaching Bilingual Learners and an MA in Language Education. Following this she worked as a consultant for numerous councils before setting up EAL Hub Ltd to fill a gap in the market. Beth felt that there was a lack of high quality EAL/Literacy boosting resources available to schools which focused on making lessons, topics and texts more accessible to EAL learners, enabling them to remain in class as much as possible.
