Aims of the course

Our EAL Review process is a bespoke process designed to help settings look at their EAL provision as though they are an outsider looking in. Sometimes “fresh eyes” is what’s needed to see where improvement can be made and this process is designed to really focus on what you already offer through a friendly, and positive, collaborative process. The process begins with a pre arrival questionnaire that helps us see where you think you are, as well as helping us to plan the outline of the day. Your staff can also complete an EAL Confidence questionnaire that will guide the process and help you to consider your training needs further. Beth will spend a day and a half in school, meeting key people, having key discussions, dropping into lessons and touring the campus. At the end of the day informal feedback will be offered to SLT and a full written report with detailed next steps will be written within 14 days of the visit.

Intended outcomes

This is a brand new and bespoke in school training programme that is conducted in review format over 1 day (plus half day for writing notes and report). The outcome, following a positive and affirming review, will be a written report that details what the school currently offers, any suggested improvements or next step guidance.

Beth Southern has over 15 years’ experience of working with EAL learners across both primary and secondary, independent and state sector and international schools. Previously a Head of EAL in a large inner city UK school, Beth knows what it’s like to have very high numbers of EAL learners operating at a wide range of levels. Having set up the department and taken it through a successful Ofsted inspection, Beth went on to obtain a PgDip in Teaching Bilingual Learners and an MA in Language Education. Following this she worked as a consultant for numerous councils before setting up EAL Hub Ltd to fill a gap in the market. Beth felt that there was a lack of high quality EAL/Literacy boosting resources available to schools which focused on making lessons, topics and texts more accessible to EAL learners, enabling them to remain in class as much as possible.
