Target audience

Primary and Secondary School librarians who wish to learn more about using storytelling as a medium for engagement with reading and literacy through delivery themselves or for setting up a club for students.

Aims of the course

This course will equip school librarians with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage students through storytelling. By understanding the importance of storytelling in education, we can create meaningful learning experiences in the library or after-school clubs.

Intended outcomes
  • Understanding the importance of storytelling in education and its role in engaging students in the school library or after-school club.
  • Developing storytelling skills, including effective use of voice, gestures, and pacing to captivate listeners.
  • Learn techniques for selecting and adapting stories for different age groups and interests.
  • Explore strategies for incorporating interactive elements, props, visuals, and technology tools to enhance storytelling experiences in the school library or after-school club.

Sarah Pavey has worked as a teacher librarian for many years, both in the independent and maintained sectors in the UK. She has published several professional books including “The Networked Librarian: The School Librarians Role in Fostering Connections, Collaboration and Co-creation Across the Community” Facet, February 2024 She has written many articles for the international library press and blogged for the UK Information Literacy Group on the subject of AI. Sarah has spoken at numerous teaching and library conferences and training events, most recently at the World Education Summit. Sarah also holds a post 16 teaching certificate and is involved with the training of teachers and librarians on a regular basis in a variety of areas.

Programme details:

This course will equip school librarians with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage students through storytelling. By understanding the importance of storytelling in education, we can create meaningful learning experiences in the library or after-school clubs. Developing storytelling skills and techniques helps captivate students’ attention, promotes literacy, and fosters a love for reading. Additionally, learning how to incorporate interactive elements and technology tools will enhance our ability to create engaging and immersive storytelling experiences for students, making the library an exciting and enriching space for learning.

Each part is 30 minutes long.

 

Live Sessions using ZOOM

Part 1:

Storytelling – An introduction

History of oracy for communication. Importance of storytelling in education and impact on student engagement. Different storytelling formats – oral, written, digital.

 

Part 2:

Building storytelling skills

Effectiveness of verbal, non-verbal and tone of voice in storytelling. Techniques to hold attention. Selecting stories for age and interest levels. Use as motivation for reluctant readers.

 

Part 3:

Storytelling in action

Planning storytelling sessions in the library. Setting up a storytelling club. Incorporating interactive elements, props, and visuals to enhance storytelling experiences and utilising digital tools and platforms. Promoting cultural appreciation and inclusivity through diverse stories

 

Part 4:

Collaboration and co-creation with storytelling

Partnering with teachers to integrate storytelling into the curriculum. Encouraging student involvement in creating and sharing their own stories. Organising storytelling events and programs in collaboration with local storytellers, authors, or community members
