Aims of the course
  • To understand why we teach spelling, punctuation and grammar and how it can empower young writers.
  • To consider why it is important to use assessment effectively to inform teaching cycles and progress within lessons.
  • To consider ways in which we can intentionally plan learning experiences that make understanding and applying SPaG skills purposeful.
  • To increase understanding and confidence of SPaG techniques and methodology.
Intended outcomes
  • Increased confidence and ability to use baseline and independent writing outcomes to identify SPaG areas for development, which will be consolidated and developed within subsequent English lessons.
  • Ability to consider and plan for a balance of opportunities within a writing cycle, which includes targeted, but purposeful, SPaG lessons.
  • A framework for planning SPaG-focused lessons which use a range of practical strategies to personalise learning journeys, promoting accelerated progress, depth of understanding and challenge.

Within a classroom of children, writing abilities and the understanding of key foundational skills and concepts can vary. Creating opportunities within the writing cycle which seek to support, consolidate and challenge pupils, at their own stages of their writing journeys, empowers them to gain a purposeful understanding of SPaG techniques and concepts.

During the sessions we will explore:

  • How to effectively use baseline/independent writing outcomes to inform the future planning of lessons and learning opportunities which are tailored to the needs of groups and individuals.
  • Discuss ways to plan a writing cycle, looking at the core components which create meaningful opportunities for pupils to gain new skills whilst bridging any gaps in understanding.
  • Create SPaG focused lessons which use staggered learning, effective use of learning assistants and technology to personalise writing journeys for all children.
  • Ensure throughout that all English experiences are meaningful, planned in context with high-quality texts and motivating writing outcomes, not as stand-alone lessons.

KS1

Session 1

  • Explore and discuss why SPaG is taught as part of curriculum requirements and delve deeper into how the effective teaching of this can empower pupils, drawing upon research and the DfE’s recently released guidance document ‘The Writing Framework’.
  • Review methods for using formative assessment effectively, particularly in relation to ‘in the moment’ feedback and informing future learning experiences.
  • Explore the idea of carousel lessons to precision teach and create personalised learning journeys for pupils.
  • Share strategies for a SPaG focused lesson which uses staggered teaching to create purposeful writing opportunities.
  • Work in groups to create a carousel lesson for a given SPaG objective.
  • Share lessons and discuss. Opportunity for Q&A

Gap Task

  • In own settings, review when a carousel SPaG lesson can be included in a current writing cycle or unit.
  • Plan lesson. If possible, teach this and review and reflect on the progress of writers.

Session 2

  • Share gap task experiences and findings. Opportunity for Q&A.
  • Introduce a second way of teaching purposeful SPaG-focused lessons, which includes planning multiple activities aimed to strengthen and secure understanding of key skills.
  • Split into groups to design a lesson which will take place in a future writing cycle or unit, utilising the practical ideas and suggestions shared during the initial exploration.
  • Share these with the group. Opportunity for Q&A.

Post-session

  • Teach the planned SPaG lesson and reflect on the progress of writers.
  • Continue to embed, review and share practical strategies explored during the sessions and disseminate to colleagues.
