Target audience

EYFS and PRIMARY Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Department Heads of Early Years and KS1; Pastoral Care Staff; PE Teachers and Sports Coaches.

Aims of the course

Participants of the training will:

  • Be able to develop and deliver age-appropriate, engaging yoga and relaxation classes and short activities to children aged 3-7 years
  • Be able to incorporate yoga, mindfulness, breathing and relaxation exercises into story-telling, art, music and movement activities
  • Understand how to incorporate the practices into everyday activities and routines in the early years classroom
  • Fully understand the effects of Yoga, Meditation & Mindfulness on children’s nervous system so that they can effectively support individual children
Intended outcomes

Through active participation, group discussions and practice teaching time we will explore:

  • Appropriate, safe and creative yoga poses and mindful movement practices to use for children aged 3-7 years
  • Age-appropriate and engaging moving meditation, visualisation and relaxation techniques
  • Breathing techniques to support self-regulation and to eliminate hyper-activity, overwhelm and anxiety
  • Concentration activities to prepare children for optimal learning experiences
  • Incorporating yoga into story-telling, music, art, dance and movement
  • Interactive yoga games, activities and adventure yoga journeys for the classroom and outdoor play
  • Understanding the effects of yoga and mindfulness practices on the children’s nervous system and other systems in the body, so that teachers can understand how and when to effectively incorporate these practices to support individual children and the entire class
  • Practically incorporating yoga into the everyday early years classroom routine and Extra-Curricular activities.

Laura McEgan, Senior Teacher Trainer, originally from the UK, has over 15 years’ experience of both yoga and education. Laura is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-500 Hour, RCYT) specialising in Children’s Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga and Ayurveda Yoga Therapy. Laura’s approach to yoga and mindfulness for children is creative, educational, therapeutic and playful. Prior to teaching yoga, Laura was an international primary school teacher; with a BA Degree in Education and Special Needs and over 18 years’ experience of working with children in educational and therapeutic settings throughout Asia and the UK. Working with a range of educational curriculums and philosophies including, Montessori, Reggio Emilia and the UK Foundation Stage Curriculum, has enabled Laura to create a unique form of Children’s Yoga as she combines her knowledge of educational philosophy and teaching methodology with the teachings and practices of yoga, and relevant, up-to-date research in psychology and neuroscience. Laura is committed to life-long learning and to sharing her passion and knowledge of education and yoga with others; she is dedicated to supporting children and young people to become open-minded, compassionate, resilient individuals by sharing the philosophy and teachings of yoga.
