Target audience

PRIMARY and SECONDARY – School leadership, inclusion/wellbeing staff, teachers and learning assistants.

Aims of the course
  • To improve the knowledge and skills of instructional school staff on literacy and as a result, improve the progress of all students.
Intended outcomes
  • Participants will better learn the process of developing literacy for all students, including English language learners and those with exceptionalities.
  • Those attending will also learn the methods for achieving both short-term and long-term literacy goals.

Melissa earned her BA in Creative Writing from Missouri State University, where she was honored with a Soul of a Poet reading series feature.  Upon graduation, Melissa moved to Chicago, Illinois and briefly worked in the advertising and non-profit sectors before pursuing a career in education.  After completing her Masters degree at DePaul University, she taught within the inner city of Chicago as a licensed Learning Behavior Specialist in public and charter high schools.  She then moved to the Middle East and worked as a SENCo in Qatar and Head of Inclusion in Dubai. Melissa has founded and led four additional needs departments and served as an instructional leader in K-12 schools until 2020. Melissa then founded Equity Advocate Solutions and leads the company as Managing Director.

Programme details:

Developing literacy fluency in a multinational setting requires systematic and procedural steps to ensure gaps are closed, and all learners develop fluent reading, writing, communication, and comprehension.  This course will help participants understand the methodology of developing literacy in students of all ages and abilities as well as necessary systems and pathways to doing so.

11:00 Observing and quantifying specific reading behaviors and how to use that data to plan intervention.

14:00 Structured systems and methods to improve reading fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression.
