
Amanda King has over twenty-five years’ experience as a
primary school teacher, senior leader and education consultant.
Judged to be an excellent teacher by Ofsted, she is now in
demand as an independent consultant, inspiring and
supporting the development of learning, teaching and
assessment of literacy and the wider application of literacy
and learning across the curriculum. Amanda carries out
moderation of teacher assessment in Key Stages One and Two
for Oxfordshire County Council and is an associate trainer for Creative Education. She has led a number of courses for schools in Europe, the Middle East and Far East on aspects of the English curriculum, such as grammar, phonics, spelling, reading and planning units of work.
Amanda is passionate about the central importance of talk for reading and writing and works extensively with schools to promote and strengthen the links between speaking and listening, reading and writing both to enthuse and motivate pupils and to raise attainment. Fundamental to her work are high standards of professionalism and effective interpersonal and communication skills, including patience, empathy and humour.

Wednesday Session 1: Why teach phonics? Opportunities to:
- Consider the role of phonics to develop pupils’ ability to decode for reading and encode for writing
- Refresh knowledge and understanding of the terminology
- Increase familiarity with the programme of study in the English National Curriculum

- Identifying starting points and gaps in learning
- Using the teaching sequence to structure learning during a discrete phonics session, illustrated with suggested activities
