Target audience

PRIMARY:  Teachers and Teaching Assistants in Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 who are new to teaching phonics or who would appreciate a ‘refresher’.

Aims of the course

In the context of a sharper focus on phonics and spelling in the Primary National Curriculum 2013, this practical training course aims to equip practitioners with the professional subject knowledge and skills in order to support and enhance the learning and teaching of phonics in the Primary phase, together with a repertoire of games and activities. 

Letters and Sounds (DfES 2007) will be used as an example of a systematic teaching programme.

Intended outcomes

Teachers will:

  • Gain familiarity with the phonics content of the new Primary National Curriculum and the implications for learning and teaching
  • Refresh their subject knowledge of synthetic phonics, including the role of phonics in reading and writing, understanding of the terminology and the correct enunciation of sounds
  • Understand the teaching sequence for a discrete phonics session and build a repertoire of strategies and activities for supporting learning
  • Identify contexts and strategies for application of phonics in reading and writing

Amanda King has over twenty-five years’ experience as a primary school teacher, senior leader and education consultant. Judged to be an excellent teacher by Ofsted, she is now in demand as an independent consultant, inspiring and supporting the development of learning, teaching and assessment of literacy and the wider application of literacy and learning across the curriculum. Amanda carries out moderation of teacher assessment in Key Stages One and Two for Oxfordshire County Council and is an associate trainer for Creative Education. She has led a number of courses for schools in Europe, the Middle East and Far East on aspects of the English curriculum, such as grammar, phonics, spelling, reading and planning units of work. Amanda is passionate about the central importance of talk for reading and writing and works extensively with schools to promote and strengthen the links between speaking and listening, reading and writing both to enthuse and motivate pupils and to raise attainment. Fundamental to her work are high standards of professionalism and effective interpersonal and communication skills, including patience, empathy and humour.

Wednesday Session 1:  Why teach phonics?  Opportunities to:

  • Consider the role of phonics to develop pupils’ ability to decode for reading and encode for writing
  • Refresh knowledge and understanding of the terminology
  • Increase familiarity with the programme of study in the English National Curriculum

Wednesday Session 2:  Planning, teaching and assessing

  • Identifying starting points and gaps in learning
  • Using the teaching sequence to structure learning during a discrete phonics session, illustrated with suggested activities

Thursday Session 3:  Further activities for supporting learning and teaching

  • A range of practical activities for teaching and learning across the phonic phases

Thursday Session 4:  Consolidating learning and support application

  • Responses to gap task
  • Strategies to support independent learning and application in reading and writing
  • Developing a supportive classroom environment
