Inclusive Education and Support Ltd aims to provide high-quality personalised consultancy, coaching and training for the development of understanding and appreciation of children and young people with SEN within their educational setting. From single inset sessions to extended programmes of consultancy, support is tailored to meet the needs of individual teachers, Head teachers and teaching assistants, incorporating whole school priorities and CPD training courses. The scope of consultancy provided by the company ranges from one-toone support for Head teachers to whole school development and strategic planning for SEN.

Gillian Douglas

Gillian Douglas has over thirty years’ experience as a secondary school teacher, senior leader with Local Authorities and educational consultant. Training to become an inspector, she is now in demand as an independent consultant, inspiring and supporting the development of understanding and knowledge around all aspects of children and young adults with SEND. Gillian has been involved with a large range of educational settings, services, professionals, and parents regarding SEND.

Gillian Douglas has over thirty years’ experience as a secondary school teacher, senior leader with Local Authorities and educational consultant. Training to become an inspector, she is now in demand as an independent consultant, inspiring and supporting the development of understanding and knowledge around all aspects of children and young adults with SEND. Gillian has been involved with a large range of educational settings, services, professionals, and parents regarding SEND.

Throughout her career she has led many courses and conferences within England and Ireland to a wide range of professionals from all agencies including Education, Health Care, and parent forums.

Gillian is passionate about children and young people with SEND and has constantly sought to promote and enhance the inclusion of all young people within education – to improve their outcomes, reduce attainment gaps and ensure they meet their full potential through the availability of support systems. She has a passion for empowering schools and believes that partnership working can produce the best outcomes for learners. Fundamental to her work are high standards of professionalism and effective interpersonal and communication skills, including patience, empathy, and humour.

Management of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs)

  • The role and responsibilities of Learning Support Assistants
  • Overall purpose of LSAs
  • Induction/line-management/professional development
  • Being part of a whole school team

Recommendations for the use of LSAs

  • Evidence based research
  • The role of the LSA in supporting learning
  • Dovetailing of teachers and LSAs

Gap task:

  • Based on the programme discussions and by providing evidence/examples, outline the strengths and weaknesses of the LSA population in your school and devise a plan to review and improve their work

Session 2: 

Scaffolders of learning and evaluation

  • LSA interactions with pupils
  • LSA role in the assessment for learning cycle.
  • Deployment of LSAs – withdrawals and intervention
  • An opportunity to discuss the evidence and outcomes of the gap task
  • School evaluation of LSAs with suggested themes and areas

  • In the context of a sharp focus on SEN and Inclusion, this practical training course aims to equip practitioners with a clarity of understanding around the value of Learning Support Assistants and how to maximise their impact on pupils with SEN.
