Target audience

EYFS, PRIMARY and SECONDARY – All interested staff are welcome to attend.  Especially relevant participants may be current and aspiring leaders, Human Resources/Capital, staff recruiters, and Inclusion/Wellbeing staff.

Aims of the course
  • To improve the knowledge and skills of those leading and developing school culture to make the workplace and learning environment more diverse, equitable and inclusive for all.
Intended outcomes
  • Develop an understanding of DEI and its positive impact on organizational culture and policies.
  • Develop one’s own role in cultivating an inclusive culture.
  • Develop how to bring about positive systemic change through organizational influence.

Melissa earned her BA in Creative Writing from Missouri State University, where she was honored with a Soul of a Poet reading series feature.  Upon graduation, Melissa moved to Chicago, Illinois and briefly worked in the advertising and non-profit sectors before pursuing a career in education.  After completing her Masters degree at DePaul University, she taught within the inner city of Chicago as a licensed Learning Behavior Specialist in public and charter high schools.  She then moved to the Middle East and worked as a SENCo in Qatar and Head of Inclusion in Dubai. Melissa has founded and led four additional needs departments and served as an instructional leader in K-12 schools until 2020. Melissa then founded Equity Advocate Solutions and leads the company as Managing Director.

Programme details:

This course will explore the core concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion and its impact on organizations. In it, the participant will learn how to self-reflect to understand one’s own biases; developing one’s own role in making systemic change; and positively impacting organizational culture.

Day One

09:00 Introduction to DEI: core concepts; equality vs equity; diversity in the 21st century; and inclusion in the workplace.
10:30 Coffee Break
11:00 Developing self-reflection to understand one’s own biases and role in the development of positive, inclusive culture in the workplace/setting.
13:00 Lunch Break
14:00 Learning about new, positive models of inclusive leadership and how to lead to make systemic change through organizational influence.
15:30 Finish
