CAROLINE MCKEE

Caroline Mckee has significant experience in education in a range of countries including the Middle East. She has led training in all of these countries and fully understands their contexts. She is an experienced lead inspector and has been involved in over 300 inspections in England. As a consultant, she has worked as a school improvement partner supporting schools to improve and helped an IB school in Dubai to be identified as the first IB school to gain an outstanding grade.

Caroline has a deep interest in developing middle leaders as they are the engine room and key drivers for all schools. Crucial to the role are skills in self-evaluation, effective monitoring and ensuring that there is a key focus on developing the teaching skills of their staff. She is experienced in a grass roots approach to developing teaching and learning in schools, and her work is to empower the learner whether that be student, teacher, or leader. She is skilled in developing leaders’ abilities to get the best out of their staff using emotional intelligence, knowledge, patience, and good humour.

Session 1

Exploring the difference between leadership and management

  • What is it that effective leaders do?
  • Knowing yourself and understanding your strengths and weaker attributes

Understanding the school context and how that impacts on your leadership

Developing the attributes needed for good leaders

  • Fostering teamwork
  • Motivating others, managing meetings, setting examples

Overcoming issues within your own context and managing up and down

Session 2

Effective monitoring

  • Exploring the aspects that need monitoring
  • Understanding your internal and external data

The importance of effective and honest self-evaluation

  • How to triangulate evidence
  • Exploring the effectiveness of teaching and learning within your department
  • Ensuring consistency of judgements

Interim activities, joint work scrutiny and reflection on leadership styles and planning personal targets for improvement.

Session 3

Effective lesson observations, protocol, and behaviours.

  • Use of videos to ensure accurate observations and to practice a professional dialogue with a colleague
  • Managing difficult conversations
  • How to have an effective professional dialogue

Interim activities to include joint lesson observations and delivering professional dialogues.

Session 4

Data analysis and using this to drive departmental improvement

  • Assessment and how this will drive the curriculum, teaching and learning
  • Ensuring that assessment informs the progress that your students make
  • The different forms of assessment

Final reflection and action planning for your next steps
