Aims of the course

The predominant way that babies under the age of one discover and learn about their world, is through sensory motor development.  During this stage a baby’s primal instinct is to explore objects by handling and mouthing them in order to find out about their physical characteristics.

Studies suggest that babies who are stimulated reach developmental milestones and become independent earlier.  They have keener senses, better muscle coordination and have a more secure self-image.  On the other hand, babies who are not stimulated are found to grow up at a distinct disadvantage in their first year in school.  This disadvantage may linger for years.

80% of baby’s brain development is in response to Physical Development and Interaction.

In the first years of life, more than 1 million new connections are formed every second in a baby’s growing brain.

This course will use evidence based research and a combination of practical and theoretical content to inform delegates of the impact music and sensory motor movement can have on all areas of infant development.

Intended outcomes

Delegates will:

  • Understand developmental milestones in infanthood
  • Learn how to stimulate and engage infants in sensory motor movement play
  • Develop an understanding of primitive and postural reflexes
  • Build an awareness of holistic developmental processed
  • Create a bank of ideas and activities to inform movement play

Helen Battelley is an internationally renowned consultant, trainer and speaker in Physical Activity and movement in Early Childhood Education and an approved trainer for AfPE. Her training style is energetic, passionate, and highly motivational. She has been working as a dance and movement specialist for over 19 years and continues to work directly with children. Helen was fundamental in the creation and release of Change4life’s ’10 Min Shake up cards’. In 2021 Helen became a Master in Early Childhood Physical Education and Physical Activity awarded by Birmingham City University. “I am driven to inspire learning and learners to broaden their approach to raise the profile of physical activity within early childhood. Movement in the early years supports a holistic approach to development and can benefit all areas of learning .I have worked directly with many schools and settings across the UK and overseas, with all ages and have found their commitment to ‘moving more’ has remained steadfast. The training courses I provide are primarily aimed at increasing confidence, motivation, and movement skills to elicit excellent responses from children. Delegates will learn how to create their own movement activities to support learning- building on these core principles to become part of their everyday planning. Staff have found the courses to ‘reignite a spark’ within them to become more physically active in their own lives.” Helen Battelley
