The scope of consultancy provided by the company ranges from one-to-one support for teachers to plan and teach effective and inspiring lessons and units of work, to school in-service training on aspects of subject knowledge or whole school development.

About the Trainer

Amanda King has over twenty-five years’ experience as a primary school teacher, senior leader and education consultant. Judged to be an excellent teacher by Ofsted, she is now in demand as an independent consultant, inspiring and supporting the development of learning, teaching and assessment of literacy and the wider application of literacy and learning across the curriculum. Amanda carries out moderation of teacher assessment in Key Stages One and Two for Oxfordshire County Council and is an associate trainer for Creative Education. She has led a number of courses for schools in Europe, the Middle East and Far East on aspects of the English curriculum, such as grammar, phonics, spelling, reading and planning units of work.

Amanda is passionate about the central importance of talk for reading and writing and works extensively with schools to promote and strengthen the links between speaking and listening, reading and writing both to enthuse and motivate pupils and to raise attainment. Fundamental to her work are high standards of professionalism and effective interpersonal and communication skills, including patience, empathy and humour.

Programme Details

Session 1: Identifying more able writers and the expectations for Greater Depth

  • Who are our greater depth writers and could there be more?
  • Understanding the criteria for achieving Greater Depth by the end of KS2 .

Session 2: Providing for our more able learners. Strategies for teaching and learning

  • What are the implications for teaching the able writers in KS2?
  • Using high-quality texts inspiration for imaginative writing.

Session 3: Achieving independence

  • Exploring and understanding the criteria for evidence of independence.
  • The role of modelling and guiding learning and the use of success criteria

Gap task:

  • Trial teaching and learning strategies and gather evidence of achievement at Greater Depth for a pupil in your class.

Session 4: Assessment

  • Using exemplification to support assessment judgments.
  • An opportunity to discuss evidence gathered during the gap task, identify evidence that contributes towards a greater depth judgment and next steps for learning and teaching.

 

Who Should Attend?
  • Leaders responsible for English language and literacy in the Primary sector. Primary Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Aims of the Course
  • Following the DfES clarification of the criteria for achieving greater depth in writing, this course offers an opportunity to reflect on the implications for learning and teaching for more able pupils in the context of the Programme of Study for English within the English National Curriculum 2013 through discussion, exploration of texts, experimenting with strategies and activities and reviewing samples of writing against greater depth criteria.

 

Intended Outcomes

Teachers will:

  • Identify and discuss the characteristics of more-able writers and how we provide for their development as learners.
  • Increase their familiarity with the end of Key Stage One criteria for Greater Depth and identify the implications for supporting pupils working at Greater Depth across the school.
  • Explore high-quality texts that might stimulate creativity and consider the importance of making strong links between spoken language, reading and writing.
  • Discuss samples of writing satisfying end of key stage greater depth standards and consider the implications for assessing writing in other year groups.
  • Have an opportunity to discuss samples of writing from pupils in their own schools, identifying evidence of achievement at Greater Depth and next steps in learning and teaching.
